With ration cards from world war one and two as tools and inspiration, I have explored how I can communicate, visualize and concretize such an abstract crisis as the climate crisis.
As Wikipedia puts it: “Rationing is a way of distributing scarce resources”. During World War 1 and 2 mainly food and textiles were rationed for households. Today, there may be a greater need for rations on consumption. To be able to reach the climate goals only a limited amount of greenhouse gases can be emitted, and we should consider CO2 and personal consumption as scarce goods.
An important inspiration for my project is Henriette Schønberg Erken, Norway’s most productive author of cookbooks. She worked during both the two world wars and she wrote cookbooks on both occasions. Schønberg Erken published cookbooks for roasting and baking during the rationing of butter, flour and sugar.
In 1940 Erken published Kriseårets kjøkkenalmanakk. In this book she focused on using all the leftovers and not allowing anything – food and other consumer goods such as clothes and textiles – to go to waste. I started this project with a desire to learn from previous generations – from my grandmother’s lifestyle to a knowledge of caring for and repairing things. Both Schønberg Erken’s and our grandparents’ mentality of caring for what we already have can take us far in solving the climate crisis.

From the jury:
